By Moonlight takes an administrative role in the 19th Century Health Records from Midlothian & Peebles District Lunatic Asylum.

A single catalogue of injuries (Book of Accidents 1874 - 1899) and a collection of 49 individual journeys (Book of Accidents 1874 - 1899)) are represented in fully and partially formed soap; one wall-mounted soaps for each escapee, and behind glass are the number of accidents/escapes arranged by the corresponding phase of the lunar cycle.

The sensitive handling of source material strips away names, diagnoses, and other identifiers of the female patients recorded in the accident and escape logs.  As the labels are deliberately lost, overlooked details of the women's experience are allowed to surface.  The work considers our need to escape physically and psychologically: each piece signifying an absence from daily life in the institution.
